Language Options

At present, we accept submissions in English and German, as these are the languages for which editorial expertise is currently available. We aim to expand the range of accepted languages in the future as our editorial team grows.

Regardless of the main language of the article:

  • An abstract in English is required at the time of submission.
  • After acceptance, authors must also provide a summary in English (maximum 2 pages), which will be published alongside the article.

These requirements ensure accessibility for the international research community and facilitate broader dissemination of the work.

Structure of submissions

Title page

For masked peer review, the submitted manuscript file should include only the title and abstract. Below the title, the total word count should be provided, including tables, figures, and footnotes. The word limit is 30,000 words for regular articles and 6,000 words for brief research reports. References are not included in the word count.

Anonymization

All author names, affiliations, contact details, and corresponding author information must be provided online during the submission process but should not be included in the submitted files until after editorial acceptance. Information about the institutions where experimental participants were recruited or tested should also be omitted. Please review the manuscript carefully for any other potentially identifying details.

Abstract

Articles should begin with an abstract of no more than 300 words, summarizing the main arguments and conclusions. Below the abstract, authors must include a list of three to five key words.

Main text

The main text should be structured in a clear and logical manner. All formatting must adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Gender Linguistics Style Sheet (see below). Double-spacing is not required, and tables and figures should be inserted in their appropriate locations within the text.

Data accessibility statement

A data accessibility statement must be included before the reference list, detailing how to access the data and any supplemental files associated with the manuscript. During the review process, ensure that data repositories are appropriately anonymized.

Ethics

Research on human participants published in Gender Linguistics must have received approval or been reviewed by an institutional review board or a comparable ethics committee at the authors’ institution. This review must cover the procedures used to obtain informed consent from participants. In the ethics and consent section, authors should provide details of the approval granted, including the name of the approving committee and, where applicable, the study or protocol number. If the research was deemed exempt by the relevant ethical body, this should be clearly stated.

Acknowledgements

The acknowledgments section should appear after the main text and before the references, clearly marked with the header Acknowledgments. If the research was supported by a funding grant, the grant provider and grant number should be included. Personal acknowledgments should only be added in the final version of the paper to maintain blind peer review. Editors should not be acknowledged.

Competing interests

If any of the authors have competing interests, these must be declared. If there are no competing interests, the following statement should be included: The author has/The authors have no competing interests to declare.

Authorship Contributions

All submitted manuscripts must include an Authorship Contributions section before the references. Contributions must be specified according to the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy), using the following roles:

Conceptualization, Data Curation, Formal Analysis, Funding Acquisition, Investigation, Methodology, Project Administration, Resources, Software, Supervision, Validation, Visualization, Writing – Original Draft, Writing – Review & Editing

To ensure anonymity during the double-blind review process, authors should refer to themselves as Author 1, Author 2, etc., rather than using names or initials. In the final accepted version, this section must be updated to include the actual names or initials of the authors.

This practice promotes transparency and ensures that all contributions are appropriately credited.

Statement on the use of AI

In line with COPE’s position on authorship and AI tools, authors must transparently disclose any use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the preparation of their manuscript. This includes tools used to generate, rewrite, or edit text.

All submissions must include a statement on AI use in a designated section at the end of the manuscript called "Statement on the use of AI". Please choose one of the following standard statements:

  • No AI use:
"No generative AI tools were used in the writing or editing of this manuscript."
  • Light AI-assisted writing:
"During the preparation of this manuscript, generative AI tools were used to assist with improving the language of the text, such as helping with diction, syntax, grammar, tone, and/or linguistic register. The author(s) take full responsibility for the content of the manuscript."

If AI tools were used for purposes beyond these (e.g. content generation or argument development), authors must contact the editorial board prior to submission to discuss whether and how such use can be made transparent and compliant with our authorship and ethical standards.

General manuscript structure

  • title page (incl. title, word count, abstract)
  • main text
  • data accessibility statement (if applicable)
  • ethics section (if applicable)
  • acknowledgements (optional)
  • competing interests (if applicable)
  • authorship contributions (obligatory)
  • statement on the use of AI (obligatory)
  • references (obligatory)

Style sheet

All authors are requested to prepare their submission according to the style sheet of Gender Linguistics. While adherence to the style sheet is recommended for initial and revised submissions, it is mandatory when submitting the final version of an accepted manuscript.

You can find the style sheet here.

Authorship guidelines

When uploading a submission to our system, the author list must be final and accurate. All listed authors must have given prior approval for their name to be included in the submitted file(s) and must consent to publication. The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all listed authors meet the criteria for authorship and have agreed to be included. They must also keep all co-authors informed of relevant editorial updates throughout the review process.

Authorship should adhere to the ICMJE guidelines, which require that authors:

  • Have made significant contributions to the conception or design of the work, or to the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data
  • Have contributed to drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content
  • Have given final approval of the version to be published
  • Have agreed to take responsibility for all aspects of the work, ensuring that any concerns regarding accuracy or integrity are properly investigated and resolved
  • Have consented to be listed as an author and approved the full author list.

All individuals who meet these criteria must be credited as authors, and those who do not should be acknowledged in a separate section. Acknowledgements may include sources of funding, research supervision, administrative support, language editing, and proofreading. The corresponding author must obtain permission from anyone mentioned in the acknowledgements, as inclusion may imply endorsement of the publication.

Any changes to the author list during the editorial process will only be considered if a clear and justified explanation is provided to the editorial team and publisher.

Masked peer review

To maintain the anonymity required for the masked peer-review process of Gender Linguistics, all reasonable steps should be taken to ensure that the identities of authors and reviewers remain confidential. Authors, editors, and reviewers (who upload documents as part of their review) should verify that the following measures have been implemented in both the text and file properties:

Authors do not need to remove references to their own work but should avoid wording that reveals their identity. For example, instead of writing, “In Smith et al. (2025), we demonstrated…”, use “As was demonstrated in Smith et al. (2025)”.

Personal acknowledgments should not be included in the submission. They should be added only in the final version prepared for publication. Care should also be taken with acknowledgments of funding sources and mentions of research locations, as these could inadvertently reveal the author’s identity. Such details should be included only in the final version of the paper.

For Microsoft Office documents, all author-identifying information should be removed from the file properties.

For PDFs, author names should be deleted from the Document Properties, accessible under the File menu in Adobe Acrobat.

Review timeline: Reviewers are by default given six weeks to complete their review. Extensions may be granted upon request.
